Revelation 21:9-14: a reflection

9One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls which were loaded with the seven last plagues came, and he spoke with me, saying, “Come here. I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.” 10He carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, 11having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal; 12having a great and high wall with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel. 13On the east were three gates, and on the north three gates, and on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. 14The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them twelve names of the twelve Apostles of the Lamb.

An angel invites John to see the bride, the wife of the Lamb, and shows him the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. It shines with the glory of God, its light like a precious jewel, clear as crystal. This is the church, God's people, pictured as a radiant city and a beloved bride, glorious not with its own beauty but with the very glory of God shining through it. It is the destiny of all who belong to Christ.

The details are rich with meaning. The city has twelve gates bearing the names of the twelve tribes of Israel, and twelve foundations bearing the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. Old covenant and new, the people of Israel and the church, are woven together into one city. God's whole redeemed people, across all the ages, belong to this one dwelling. And the gates open in every direction, north, south, east, and west, a city ready to receive people gathered from everywhere.

This is where the story is going, and it is worth lifting your eyes to see it. Your ultimate future is not a lonely or shadowy thing but a glorious city, radiant with God's own glory, where all his people from every age dwell together as the beloved bride of the Lamb. Whatever this life holds, let this vision steady and gladden you. You are being brought to a city with gates open wide, built on the foundation of the apostles, shining with the glory of God. Live today as one destined for that home.

Lord, you have shown that the destiny of your people is a glorious city, radiant with your glory, the beloved bride of the Lamb, where your people from every age dwell together. Lift my eyes to that home when this life feels heavy. Let the vision of the city with gates open wide steady and gladden me, and help me to live today as one being brought to dwell forever with you. Amen.
