Philippians 2:19-24: a reflection

Paul, writing from prison, tells the Philippians he hopes to send Timothy to them, and in doing so he pays Timothy a remarkable compliment. I have no one else like him, Paul says, who will genuinely care for your welfare. In a pointed contrast, he adds, they all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. Timothy stood out precisely because he was rare: a person who truly cared about others rather than himself, whose concern was genuine and not self-serving.

What made Timothy so valuable was not brilliance or position but proven, genuine care. He had served alongside Paul like a son with a father, tested and faithful, always concerned for the good of others and the work of the gospel. In a world, then as now, where most people looked out for themselves, Timothy's authentic concern for others' welfare made him precious to Paul and to the churches. His love was real, and everyone could see it.

Paul's words hold up a mirror and an invitation. The mirror: it is all too easy to be among those who seek their own interests, even in the church, attending to our own concerns while others' needs go unnoticed. The invitation: to be a Timothy, someone whose care for others is genuine and evident, who truly looks to the welfare of others and the things of Christ. Ask God to free you from self-preoccupation and to make you the rare kind of person Paul praised, one who genuinely cares.
