Numbers 4:7-11: a reflection

7“On the table of show bread they shall spread a blue cloth, and put on it the dishes, the spoons, the bowls, and the cups with which to pour out; and the continual bread shall be on it. 8They shall spread on them a scarlet cloth, and cover it with a covering of sealskin, and shall put in its poles. 9“They shall take a blue cloth and cover the lamp stand of the light, its lamps, its snuffers, its snuff dishes, and all its oil vessels, with which they minister to it. 10They shall put it and all its vessels within a covering of sealskin, and shall put it on the frame. 11“On the golden altar they shall spread a blue cloth, and cover it with a covering of sealskin, and shall put in its poles.

This passage gives careful instructions for how the sacred furnishings of the tabernacle, the table, the lampstand, the golden altar, were to be covered and carried when Israel moved. Each was to be wrapped in cloths of blue and scarlet and protective coverings, and fitted with poles for carrying. Nothing holy was to be exposed carelessly or handled roughly. Even in transit, the things dedicated to God were treated with meticulous reverence.

There is a beauty in this careful attention. The people of God did not just throw the sacred objects onto a wagon; they wrapped each one thoughtfully, covered it, and bore it with reverence. The very way they moved God's holy things through the wilderness reflected their awareness that these belonged to a holy God. Reverence was not reserved for grand moments of worship; it shaped even the ordinary work of packing up and carrying.

There is a lesson here about carrying holy things through ordinary life. The reverence God's people showed even in transporting the sacred is a picture of how we might handle what is holy in our own days, God's word, his worship, the sacred trust of serving him. It is easy to grow careless with holy things through familiarity. Let this passage renew your reverence, so that even in the ordinary handling of what belongs to God, you carry it thoughtfully and with honor, aware of whose it is.

Lord, your people wrapped and carried even the sacred furnishings with meticulous reverence, aware that they belonged to you. Guard me from growing careless with holy things through familiarity. Renew my reverence for your word, your worship, and the trust of serving you, so that even in the ordinary handling of what is yours, I carry it thoughtfully and with honor. Amen.
