Psalms 82:1-8: a reflection

1God presides in the great assembly. He judges among the gods. 2“How long will you judge unjustly, and show partiality to the wicked?” Selah. 3“Defend the weak, the poor, and the fatherless. Maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. 4Rescue the weak and needy. Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.” 5They don’t know, neither do they understand. They walk back and forth in darkness. All the foundations of the earth are shaken. 6I said, “You are gods, all of you are sons of the Most High. 7Nevertheless you shall die like men, and fall like one of the rulers.” 8Arise, God, judge the earth, for you inherit all of the nations.

The psalm opens with a striking scene: God standing in the assembly of rulers and judges, holding them to account. And his charge is pointed: how long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? Then comes the heart of what God requires of those with power: defend the weak and the fatherless, uphold the cause of the poor and oppressed, rescue the needy from the hand of the wicked. God measures those in authority by how they treat the vulnerable.

The rulers, the psalm says, do not know or understand; they walk in darkness, and their injustice shakes the very foundations of the world. God had given them a lofty calling, even calling them gods and sons of the Most High in the sense of representing his authority, but they would die like everyone else and answer for their failures. Power is a trust, and those who abuse it, ignoring the weak and favoring the wicked, stand under God's judgment. The psalm ends with a cry: arise, O God, and judge the earth.

This psalm speaks to two things. First, God cares deeply about justice for the vulnerable, and he holds those with power accountable for how they treat the weak, the poor, and the fatherless. Wherever you have influence, remember that God measures you by your care for those who cannot defend themselves. Second, when you see injustice go unchecked and those in power favor the wicked, join the psalm's final cry: arise, O God, and judge the earth. The God who calls for justice will one day fully bring it.

Lord, you stand in the assembly of rulers and call them to defend the weak, the poor, and the fatherless, holding them accountable for how they treat the vulnerable. Wherever I have influence, help me to use it for justice and to care for those who cannot defend themselves. And when injustice goes unchecked, I join the psalm's cry: arise, O God, and judge the earth. Bring your justice at last. Amen.
