Numbers 26:33-48: a reflection

33Zelophehad the son of Hepher had no sons, but daughters: and the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 34These are the families of Manasseh. Those who were counted of them were fifty-two thousand seven hundred. 35These are the sons of Ephraim after their families: of Shuthelah, the family of the Shuthelahites; of Becher, the family of the Becherites; of Tahan, the family of the Tahanites. 36These are the sons of Shuthelah: of Eran, the family of the Eranites. 37These are the families of the sons of Ephraim according to those who were counted of them, thirty-two thousand five hundred. In the middle of this census of Israel's tribes, a small detail stands out. The record notes that Zelophehad, of the tribe of Manasseh, had no sons but only daughters, and it names them all: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. In a genealogy overwhelmingly focused on sons and their families, these five daughters are named specifically, given a place in the sacred record when the customs of the time might easily have passed over them.

This is no accident. These same women would soon come before Moses to ask for their father's inheritance, since he had no sons, and God would rule in their favor, establishing a principle that protected daughters in their position. Here, before that story unfolds, they are already named, already noticed. In a world that often overlooked women without male relatives, God saw these five and made sure their names were recorded. They were not forgotten in the shuffle of a male-centered genealogy.

There is comfort here for anyone who feels overlooked by the systems and customs of the world, passed over because they do not fit the usual categories of importance. God notices those the world tends to miss. He named the daughters of Zelophehad and honored their cause. Whatever standing you lack in the world's eyes, you are seen and known by God, who takes special care to notice and provide for those others overlook. You are not lost in the shuffle. God knows your name.

Lord, in a genealogy focused on sons, you took care to name the five daughters of Zelophehad, noticing those the customs of the time might have passed over. Thank you that you see those the world overlooks. When I feel unnoticed or passed over because I do not fit the usual categories, remind me that you know my name and take special care of the overlooked. I am not lost in the shuffle to you. Amen.
