Daniel (Greek) 13:36-40: a reflection

36The elders said, “As we walked in the garden alone, this woman came in with two maids, shut the garden doors, and sent the maids away. 37Then a young man who was hidden there came to her and lay with her. 38And we, being in a corner of the garden, saw this wickedness and ran to them. 39And when we saw them together, we couldn’t hold the man; for he was stronger than we, and opened the doors, and leaped out. 40But having taken this woman, we asked who the young man was, but she would not tell us. We testify these things.

This passage comes from the story of Susanna, a virtuous woman whom two corrupt elders tried to exploit and, when she refused them, conspired to destroy. Here they stand before the assembly and give false testimony against her, inventing a tale of wrongdoing to cover their own guilt and to condemn an innocent woman. Their lie is detailed and confident, and because they are respected elders, their word carries weight. Susanna's good name, and her very life, hang on a fabricated accusation.

It is a chilling picture of how the innocent can be endangered by those who abuse their standing to lie. Susanna had done nothing wrong; her only offense was refusing to sin. Yet these respected men of standing turned their credibility into a weapon against her. For a moment, it seems that a lie told by important people will prevail over the truth. The story exposes a painful reality: the vulnerable can be crushed by false testimony from those the community trusts.

But the fuller story, just beyond this passage, is one of vindication: God stirs up young Daniel to expose the elders' lie and clear Susanna's name. And that is the hope to hold onto. When you or someone you know is falsely accused, when the truth seems buried under the confident lies of those with standing, remember that God sees what really happened. He is the defender of the innocent and the vindicator of truth. Do not despair when falsehood seems to win; the God who cleared Susanna sees, and in his time he brings the truth to light.

Lord, corrupt elders told confident lies to destroy an innocent woman, and for a moment falsehood seemed to prevail, yet you saw the truth and vindicated her. When I or those I love are falsely accused, keep me from despair. You are the defender of the innocent and the vindicator of truth. Sustain me when lies seem to win, and bring the truth to light in your time, as you did for Susanna. Amen.
