Nehemiah 10:17-27: a reflection

This passage is a list of names, the leaders and heads of families who put their seal to a solemn covenant, publicly committing themselves and their households to follow God's law. It is a roll call of people willing to attach their names to a promise. In an age of casual commitments, there is something weighty about people stepping forward to pledge themselves, by name, to walk with God, binding themselves to a public, accountable commitment.

A covenant sealed with names is a serious thing. These were not vague intentions but recorded promises, pledges that others could hold them to. By putting their names to the covenant, these leaders declared before the whole community that they intended to be faithful to God. And God noticed; their names were preserved in the sacred record. Commitment, publicly made and named, mattered then and matters still.

There is value in the kind of definite, named commitment these leaders made. It is easy to keep our devotion to God vague and private, never quite pinned down, never accountable to anyone. But there is strength in a clear, public commitment, in saying plainly, before God and others, that you intend to follow him. Consider whether your own commitment to God is clear and definite or comfortably vague. Like those who sealed the covenant, be willing to put your name to your devotion, and to live accountable to the promise you have made.
