Numbers 18:8-13: a reflection

8The LORD spoke to Aaron, “Behold, I myself have given you the command of my wave offerings, even all the holy things of the children of Israel. I have given them to you by reason of the anointing, and to your sons, as a portion forever. 9This shall be yours of the most holy things from the fire: every offering of theirs, even every meal offering of theirs, and every sin offering of theirs, and every trespass offering of theirs, which they shall give to me, shall be most holy for you and for your sons. 10You shall eat of it like the most holy things. Every male shall eat of it. It shall be holy to you. 11“This is yours, too: the wave offering of their gift, even all the wave offerings of the children of Israel. I have given them to you, and to your sons and to your daughters with you, as a portion forever. Everyone who is clean in your house shall eat of it. 12“I have given to you all the best of the oil, all the best of the vintage, and of the grain, the first fruits of them which they give to the LORD. 13The first-ripe fruits of all that is in their land, which they bring to the LORD, shall be yours. Everyone who is clean in your house shall eat of it.

God speaks to Aaron about the provision for the priests, who, unlike the other tribes, would receive no land of their own. Instead, God gives them a portion of the offerings brought to him: the holy gifts, the firstfruits, the best of the oil, wine, and grain that the people presented. Those who devoted their lives to serving God at the sanctuary would be sustained by what was offered to God himself. Their livelihood came directly from the offerings dedicated to the Lord.

There is a deep principle here. The priests had no inheritance of land because, as God says elsewhere, he himself was their inheritance and portion. Those who gave themselves wholly to God's service did not thereby lose their provision; God provided for them from what was his. They were sustained not by the usual means of land and harvest but by their share in the things devoted to God. Their security rested on God's own faithfulness to provide for those who served him.

This speaks to anyone who gives themselves to serving God, whether in a formal role or simply in a life dedicated to him. You may fear that devotion to God will leave you without provision, that giving yourself to his service means going without. But God provided for his priests from his own offerings, and he provides for those who serve him still. When you give yourself to God, he becomes, in a sense, your portion and provision. Trust the God who sustains his servants, and do not fear that devotion to him will leave you lacking.

Lord, you provided for your priests not with land but from your own offerings, so that those who served you were sustained by what was dedicated to you. When I fear that devoting myself to your service will leave me without provision, remind me that you become the portion of those who serve you. Give me the faith to trust that you sustain your servants, and let me not fear that giving myself to you will leave me lacking. Amen.
