1 Chronicles 7:1-5: a reflection

1Of the sons of Issachar: Tola, Puah, Jashub, and Shimron, four. 2The sons of Tola: Uzzi, Rephaiah, Jeriel, Jahmai, Ibsam, and Shemuel, heads of their fathers’ houses, of Tola; mighty men of valor in their generations. Their number in the days of David was twenty-two thousand six hundred. 3The son of Uzzi: Izrahiah. The sons of Izrahiah: Michael, Obadiah, Joel, and Isshiah, five; all of them chief men. 4With them, by their generations, after their fathers’ houses, were bands of the army for war, thirty-six thousand; for they had many wives and sons. 5Their brothers among all the families of Issachar, mighty men of valor, listed in all by genealogy, were eighty-seven thousand.

This passage counts the descendants of Issachar, listing the heads of families and the large numbers of capable men ready for service in their generations. It is a record of a strong and numerous tribe, tens of thousands of people organized by their family houses, each generation producing many able to serve. To the casual reader it is a page of names and numbers, but it represents a whole tribe of ordinary families producing people ready to take their place among God's people.

What such lists quietly celebrate is the strength that comes from many faithful, ordinary families. No single hero is named as the tribe's glory; rather, the record honors the sheer number of capable people that the families of Issachar produced across the generations. God's work is carried forward not usually by a few remarkable individuals but by many ordinary families, each raising up people ready to serve, generation after generation.

There is encouragement here for the value of ordinary, faithful family life. You may never be a named hero, but the quiet work of raising a family that loves God, of being one capable, faithful person among many, is exactly how God builds and sustains his people. Do not despise the ordinary. The strength of God's people, then and now, rests largely on countless unremarkable families producing faithful people. Take your place among them, and count it a worthy calling.

Lord, the strength of Issachar was not one hero but many ordinary families producing faithful people, generation after generation. Help me to value the quiet work of ordinary, faithful life. Even if I am never a named hero, let me be one faithful person among the many through whom you build and sustain your people. Make my ordinary faithfulness count for your kingdom. Amen.
