Philippians 3:1-6: a reflection

1Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord! To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not tiresome, but for you it is safe. 2Beware of the dogs; beware of the evil workers; beware of the false circumcision. 3For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh; 4though I myself might have confidence even in the flesh. If any other man thinks that he has confidence in the flesh, I yet more: 5circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee; 6concerning zeal, persecuting the assembly; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, found blameless.

Paul lists an impressive set of credentials: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews, a Pharisee zealous for the law, blameless by its standard. If anyone could claim confidence based on religious pedigree and achievement, Paul says, it was him. He had the background, the training, the zeal, the record. By every external measure of religious standing, he was at the top.

And yet Paul's whole point is that he puts no confidence in any of it. We are the ones, he says, who worship God in the Spirit, glory in Christ Jesus, and put no confidence in the flesh. All the credentials he could boast in, he now regards as no basis for standing before God. His confidence has shifted entirely from what he had achieved and inherited to what Christ has done. The resume that once defined him no longer holds his trust.

This searches all of us who might quietly rest our confidence on our religious background, our good record, our knowledge, our zeal. Paul had all of that in abundance and learned to place no confidence in it. Where do you place your confidence before God? If it is in your credentials, your upbringing, your moral record, your religious achievements, Paul calls you to shift it entirely to Christ. Boast not in what you are or have done, but in what Christ has done, and worship God in the Spirit, glorying in him alone.

Lord, Paul had every religious credential and learned to place no confidence in any of it, glorying instead in Christ. Search where I place my own confidence before you. If I am quietly resting on my background, my record, or my religious achievements, shift my trust entirely to Christ. Let me boast not in what I am or have done, but in what he has done, and worship you in the Spirit alone. Amen.
