Esther (Greek) 6:1-5: a reflection

1The Lord removed sleep from the king that night; so he told his servant to bring in the books, the registers of daily events, to read to him. 2And he found the records written concerning Mordecai, how he had told the king about the king’s two chamberlains, when they were keeping guard, and sought to lay hands on Ahasuerus. 3The king said, “What honor or favor have we done for Mordecai?” The king’s servants said, “You haven’t done anything for him.” 4And while the king was enquiring about the kindness of Mordecai, behold, Haman was in the court. The king said, “Who is in the court? Now Haman had come in to speak to the king about hanging Mordecai on the gallows which he had prepared. 5The king’s servants said, “Behold, Haman stands in the court.” And the king said, “Call him!”

On the very night before Haman planned to have Mordecai executed, something small but decisive happens: the king cannot sleep. To pass the restless hours, he has the royal records read to him, and they happen to fall on the account of how Mordecai had once uncovered a plot to assassinate the king, a good deed that had gone unrewarded. The king, struck by this, resolves to honor Mordecai, at the precise moment Haman is arriving to request his death.

The book of Esther famously never mentions God by name, yet his hand is unmistakable in scenes like this. A sleepless night, a reading of old records, the timing of Haman's arrival, all these seemingly random details converge to turn the situation completely around. What looks like coincidence, an insomniac king, a chance passage read aloud, is in fact the quiet work of a God who is orchestrating events behind the scenes to protect his people and overturn the plans of the wicked.

This scene is a picture of God's hidden providence, at work even when he is not obviously visible. So much of God's care for us comes not through dramatic miracles but through the quiet arrangement of ordinary details, a chance meeting, a delay, a sleepless night, that we may only later recognize as his hand. Trust that God is at work behind the scenes of your life, weaving even the small and seemingly random things toward his purposes. The God who kept a king awake at just the right moment is quietly ordering your story too.

Lord, on the very night Haman plotted Mordecai's death, you kept the king awake and turned everything around through a reading of old records, your hidden hand at work in seemingly random details. Thank you that you are at work behind the scenes of my life, ordering even the small and ordinary things toward your purposes. When I cannot see you acting, help me to trust your quiet providence, and to know that you are weaving my story too. Amen.
