Mark 13:1-6: a reflection

1As he went out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Teacher, see what kind of stones and what kind of buildings!” 2Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone on another, which will not be thrown down.” 3As he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, 4“Tell us, when will these things be? What is the sign that these things are all about to be fulfilled?” 5Jesus, answering, began to tell them, “Be careful that no one leads you astray. 6For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and will lead many astray.

As he leaves the temple, a disciple marvels at its grandeur: look, teacher, what massive stones and magnificent buildings! And Jesus responds with a startling word: do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left on another; all will be thrown down. The most impressive structure the disciples knew, the glorious temple, would one day be reduced to rubble. Nothing built by human hands, however grand, is permanent.

When the disciples ask when this will happen, Jesus begins his answer with a warning: watch out that no one deceives you. Many will come claiming his name and his authority, and lead many astray. In times of upheaval, when even the grandest and most trusted things prove impermanent, people become vulnerable to false claims and false saviors. Jesus' first counsel is not a timetable but a caution: be discerning, do not be led astray.

Two things to carry from this. First, do not put your ultimate trust in impressive human things, however grand and solid they seem; even a magnificent temple can be thrown down. Only God and his word endure. Second, be watchful against deception, especially in unsettled times when people grasp for something to hold onto and false voices multiply. Anchor yourself in Christ and his word, so that when impressive things crumble and deceptive voices rise, you are not led astray but held steady in the truth.

Lord Jesus, you said even the magnificent temple would be thrown down, and you warned your followers to watch that no one deceives them. Guard me from putting my ultimate trust in impressive human things that will not last. And keep me discerning against the false voices that multiply in unsettled times. Anchor me in you and your word, which alone endure, so that I am not led astray but held steady in the truth. Amen.
