Genesis 1:20-25: a reflection

20God said, “Let the waters abound with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the sky.” 21God created the large sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed, after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind. God saw that it was good. 22God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23There was evening and there was morning, a fifth day. 24God said, “Let the earth produce living creatures after their kind, livestock, creeping things, and animals of the earth after their kind;” and it was so. 25God made the animals of the earth after their kind, and the livestock after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind. God saw that it was good.

On the fifth and sixth days of creation, God fills the world with living things: the waters teem with sea creatures, birds fly across the sky, and the land brings forth animals of every kind. And a refrain runs through it all: God saw that it was good. The astonishing diversity of life, the creatures of sea and sky and land in all their variety, came from God's hand and met with his own approval. He looked at what he had made and pronounced it good.

There is a note of delight in this account. God does not create a bare, functional world but one bursting with variety and life, and he blesses the creatures, telling them to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. The Creator takes pleasure in the abundance and diversity of what he has made. Every kind of creature, from the great sea animals to the smallest thing that creeps on the ground, is part of a world God calls good.

This passage invites you to see the world as God sees it: as good, made with delight, full of the diversity that pleased its Creator. In a world that can feel broken and heavy, it is worth remembering that creation itself came from God's hand and was pronounced good. Let the goodness and abundance of what God has made stir wonder and gratitude in you. The God who filled the seas and skies and lands with life, and called it good, is the God who made you too, and who delights in what he creates.

Lord, you filled the world with living things of every kind and saw that it was good, blessing them with life and abundance. In a world that can feel heavy, help me to see the goodness of what you have made and to marvel at its diversity and life. Stir wonder and gratitude in me for your good creation, and remind me that the God who delighted in all he made delights in me too. Amen.
