Mark 13:24-31: a reflection
24But in those days, after that oppression, the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, 25the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken. 26Then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27Then he will send out his angels, and will gather together his chosen ones from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the sky. 28“Now from the fig tree, learn this parable. When the branch has now become tender and produces its leaves, you know that the summer is near; 29even so you also, when you see these things coming to pass, know that it is near, at the doors. 30Most certainly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things happen. 31Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
Jesus describes his return in vivid terms: cosmic upheaval, the sun darkened, the stars falling, the powers of the heavens shaken, and then the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. The One who came the first time in humility, born in a stable, dying on a cross, will come again unmistakably, in power and glory that no one will miss. History is moving toward this: the certain, visible return of Christ.
And his first act at that coming is gathering: he will send his angels and gather his chosen ones from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven. The return of Christ is not only judgment on a passing world but the gathering home of his people from every corner of the earth. Then Jesus gives a promise of stunning permanence: heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. Everything else is temporary; his word stands forever.
This vision gives you a fixed hope. However shaken the world becomes, Christ is coming in power and glory, and when he comes, he will gather his own from every corner of the earth, you among them if you belong to him. And his word, unlike everything else, will never pass away. When the world feels unstable and everything solid seems to be crumbling, anchor yourself in the certainty of his return and the permanence of his word. He is coming, he will gather his people, and his word stands forever.
Lord Jesus, you will come again in power and glory, and gather your chosen ones from the ends of the earth. When the world feels shaken and everything solid seems to crumble, anchor me in the certainty of your return and the permanence of your word, which will never pass away. Gather me among your own, and let the hope of your coming steady me amid every upheaval. Amen.
