Job 42:1-6: a reflection

After all his suffering, all his questions, and all of God's answers, Job responds with humble surrender. I know that you can do all things, he says, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. He acknowledges that he had spoken of things too wonderful for him, matters he did not understand. He does not receive a tidy explanation of his suffering; instead he receives God himself, and that encounter is enough to change everything.

The turning point is captured in one profound sentence: I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you. Job had known about God before, secondhand, by report. Now he has met God directly, and the difference is total. This fresh, firsthand encounter with the living God leads him not to further complaint but to humility and repentance: therefore I abhor myself and repent in dust and ashes. Seeing God as he truly is puts everything else, even his own suffering, in a new light.

There is a world of difference between knowing about God and truly knowing him, between secondhand religion and a real encounter with the living God. Job had been a good and faithful man all along, but even he found that meeting God directly transformed him. Ask whether your faith is mostly hearsay, things you have heard about God, or a living encounter with him. Seek not just to know about God but to know him, and let that encounter humble you, satisfy you, and change you, as it changed Job.
