Numbers 7:16-20: a reflection

16one male goat for a sin offering; 17and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two head of cattle, five rams, five male goats, and five male lambs a year old. This was the offering of Nahshon the son of Amminadab. 18On the second day Nethanel the son of Zuar, prince of Issachar, gave his offering. 19He offered for his offering: one silver platter, the weight of which was one hundred thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a meal offering; 20one golden ladle of ten shekels, full of incense;

This passage is part of a long account of the offerings brought by the leaders of each of Israel's tribes for the dedication of the tabernacle. What is striking, reading the whole chapter, is that each leader brought exactly the same gift: a silver platter and bowl filled with fine flour, a golden dish of incense, and animals for the various offerings. Day after day, tribe after tribe, the same generous offering was presented, each leader taking his turn to give to the house of God.

There is beauty in this equality of giving. No tribe tried to outdo another or brought a lesser gift; each leader brought the same full, generous offering for the same purpose. And Scripture records each one individually, by name, even though the gifts were identical. God did not lump them together as one anonymous total; he honored each tribe's offering separately, valuing the contribution of each. Everyone had a part, everyone gave generously, and everyone was named.

There is a picture here of how God's people give and serve together. Each has a part to bring, and the giving is meant to be generous and wholehearted, not competing to outshine one another but each contributing fully. And God notices each one's offering individually; your part is not lost in the crowd or overshadowed by others. Bring your own full, generous gift to God's work, whatever it is, and take comfort that he honors each contribution by name. In the giving of God's people, everyone has a part, and everyone is seen.

Lord, each tribal leader brought the same generous offering for your house, and you honored each one by name. Help me to bring my own full, wholehearted gift to your work, not competing to outshine others but contributing gladly. And thank you that you notice each offering individually; my part is not lost in the crowd. Let me give generously, and take comfort that you see and value my contribution. Amen.
