Proverbs 31:17-31: a reflection

17She arms her waist with strength, and makes her arms strong. 18She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp doesn’t go out by night. 19She lays her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. 20She opens her arms to the poor; yes, she extends her hands to the needy. 21She is not afraid of the snow for her household, for all her household are clothed with scarlet. 22She makes for herself carpets of tapestry. Her clothing is fine linen and purple. 23Her husband is respected in the gates, when he sits among the elders of the land. 24She makes linen garments and sells them, and delivers sashes to the merchant. 25Strength and dignity are her clothing. She laughs at the time to come. 26She opens her mouth with wisdom. Kind instruction is on her tongue. 27She looks well to the ways of her household, and doesn’t eat the bread of idleness. 28Her children rise up and call her blessed. Her husband also praises her: 29“Many women do noble things, but you excel them all.” 30Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised. 31Give her of the fruit of her hands! Let her works praise her in the gates!

This passage completes the portrait of the woman of strength begun earlier in the chapter. She is industrious and capable, working with her hands, managing a household, running a small trade, and providing for her family. She is generous, opening her arms to the poor and reaching out to the needy. She is wise, with kind instruction on her tongue. Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she can laugh at the days to come, unafraid of the future.

But the portrait reaches its climax not in her many accomplishments but in the source of them all. Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, the passage says, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Underneath all her strength, generosity, and wisdom lies the true foundation: reverence for God. Her capable, dignified, fearless life flows from a heart that fears the Lord. That, not her achievements or her appearance, is what makes her truly praiseworthy.

The principle at the heart of this portrait applies to everyone, not just to women. The world praises charm and beauty and outward success, but these are deceptive and fleeting. What God honors, and what produces a life of real strength, dignity, generosity, and wisdom, is the fear of the Lord, a heart that reveres and trusts him. Do not build your life on the deceptive foundations of charm, appearance, or achievement. Build it on the fear of the Lord, and from that root will grow a life truly worthy of praise.

Lord, this portrait praises a woman of strength, generosity, and wisdom, but names its true foundation: the fear of the Lord, which outlasts deceptive charm and fleeting beauty. Let me build my own life on that foundation, not on appearance or achievement, which fade. Give me a heart that reveres and trusts you, and from that root, grow in me strength, dignity, generosity, and wisdom. Let my life be worthy of praise because it is rooted in you. Amen.
