Revelation 7:1-8: a reflection
1After this, I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, so that no wind would blow on the earth, or on the sea, or on any tree. 2I saw another angel ascend from the sunrise, having the seal of the living God. He cried with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was given to harm the earth and the sea, 3saying, “Don’t harm the earth, the sea, or the trees, until we have sealed the bondservants of our God on their foreheads!” 4I heard the number of those who were sealed, one hundred forty-four thousand, sealed out of every tribe of the children of Israel: 5of the tribe of Judah twelve thousand were sealed, of the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand, of the tribe of Gad twelve thousand, 6of the tribe of Asher twelve thousand, of the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand, of the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand, 7of the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand, of the tribe of Levi twelve thousand, of the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand, 8of the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand, of the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand, and of the tribe of Benjamin twelve thousand were sealed.
In this vision, four angels stand ready to loose the winds of harm on the earth, but they are held back. Another angel rises with the seal of the living God and calls out: do not harm the earth or the sea until we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads. Judgment waits while God marks his own.
Notice the order of things. Before the winds are released, before the trouble falls, God makes sure his people are sealed, marked as belonging to him. He does not lose track of his own in the coming storm; he identifies them first, puts his seal on them, claims them visibly as his. The harm is even held back until this is done.
There is deep reassurance in that seal. To be sealed is to be known and owned and kept, marked by God as his in a way that the coming trouble cannot erase. If you belong to God, you are not an anonymous face in a threatened crowd; you are sealed, named, his. Whatever winds may blow in your own time, the God who holds them back until his own are marked has not overlooked you. You bear his seal. Rest in being known and kept by him.
Lord, before the storm you seal and keep your own. Thank you that I am not anonymous to you but marked as yours. Whatever winds blow, hold me as one sealed and known by you.
