John 1:29-34: a reflection

29The next day, he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for he was before me.’ 31I didn’t know him, but for this reason I came baptizing in water, that he would be revealed to Israel.” 32John testified, saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained on him. 33I didn’t recognize him, but he who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘On whomever you will see the Spirit descending and remaining on him is he who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’ 34I have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

When John the Baptist sees Jesus coming toward him, he gives him a title that gathers up the whole meaning of his coming: Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! In a world of religious effort and endless sacrifices, John points to Jesus as the Lamb, God's own provided sacrifice, the one who does what no other lamb could: takes away sin, not just covers it, not just for a moment, but takes it away, and not for one person but for the world.

Notice each part of that declaration. Jesus is the Lamb of God, God's own provision, the sacrifice God himself supplies. He takes away sin, actually removes the guilt and burden of it, doing what all the animal sacrifices could only foreshadow. And the reach of it is the sin of the world, not a narrow circle but a scope as wide as humanity, a Lamb whose sacrifice is sufficient for all. John's whole ministry was to point to this one and say, Behold him.

That title is the heart of the gospel and an invitation to look. Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Whatever weight of sin you carry, whatever guilt you cannot shed by your own effort, here is the one who takes it away, God's own Lamb, provided for exactly this. You do not have to carry your sin or try to atone for it yourself; the Lamb has come to take it away. Behold him, and let him lift from you the sin you could never remove on your own. He is the Lamb of God, and he takes away the sin of the world, including yours.

Lord Jesus, John pointed to you and said, Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Thank you that you are God's own provided sacrifice, who does not merely cover sin but takes it away, and whose sacrifice is sufficient for the whole world, including me. Whatever weight of sin and guilt I carry that I cannot shed myself, help me bring it to you, the Lamb, and let you take it away. I behold you, and I trust you.
