Sirach 44:17-23: a reflection

17Noah was found perfect and righteous. In the season of wrath, he kept the race alive. Therefore a remnant was left on the earth when the flood came. 18Everlasting covenants were made with him, that all flesh should no more be blotted out by a flood. 19Abraham was a great father of a multitude of nations. There was none found like him in glory, 20who kept the law of the Most High, and was taken into covenant with him. In his flesh he established the covenant. When he was tested, he was found faithful. 21Therefore he assured him by an oath that the nations would be blessed through his offspring, that he would multiply him like the dust of the earth, exalt his offspring like the stars, and cause them to inherit from sea to sea, and from the Euphrates River to the utmost parts of the earth. 22In Isaac also, he established the same assurance for Abraham his father’s sake, the blessing of all men, and the covenant. 23He made it rest upon the head of Jacob. He acknowledged him in his blessings, gave to him by inheritance, and divided his portions. He distributed them among twelve tribes.

In its praise of the faithful ancestors, Sirach comes to Abraham and singles out one thing above all: when he was tested, he was found faithful. Abraham's greatness, the covenant God made with him, the promise that all nations would be blessed through his offspring, all of it is connected to this: that in the testing, he held firm. He was tested, and he was found faithful, and God's covenant blessings flowed from that proven faithfulness.

Notice the role testing played. Abraham's faith was not merely claimed; it was tested, proven under pressure, and found genuine. The testing did not destroy his faith; it revealed and confirmed it. When he was tested, he was found faithful, the text says, and it was to this tested, proven faithfulness that God bound his covenant promises. The testing was the crucible in which Abraham's faith was shown to be real.

That reframes the testings we face. We tend to see tests of our faith as threats, as things to be endured or escaped. But Scripture sees testing as the proving ground where faith is revealed and confirmed as genuine. Abraham was found faithful when tested, and that is held up as his glory. When your own faith is tested, by hardship, by delay, by the call to obey when it is costly, that testing is an opportunity for your faith to be proven real, as Abraham's was. Do not merely resent the test; ask that, like Abraham, you may be found faithful in it. Tested faith, proven genuine, is what God honors and blesses.

Lord, when Abraham was tested, he was found faithful, and your covenant blessings flowed from that proven faithfulness. When my own faith is tested, by hardship, delay, or costly obedience, help me see the testing not only as a threat but as the proving ground where faith is shown genuine. Give me grace to be found faithful, as Abraham was. Let my faith, tested and proven real, be the kind you honor and bless. Hold me faithful in the testing.
