Numbers 3:16-20: a reflection

16Moses counted them according to the LORD’s word, as he was commanded. 17These were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 18These are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei. 19The sons of Kohath by their families: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. 20The sons of Merari by their families: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their fathers’ houses.

This passage counts and names the families of Levi, the tribe God set apart for the service of his tabernacle: the sons of Gershon, Kohath, and Merari, and the families that came from each. It is a dry list of names, but behind it is something worth noticing: God had these servants of his sanctuary counted and named, family by family, each with its appointed place and work in his household.

Notice the care in it. God did not treat those who served him as an anonymous mass; he had them numbered and named, each family recorded, each with a specific role in the service of his dwelling. The Gershonites, the Kohathites, the Merarites, each had their assigned duties, their place in the ordered service of God. Those set apart for God were known by name and given their particular part.

There is quiet reassurance in that about our own place in God's service. If you belong to God, you are not an anonymous face in a crowd of the faithful; God knows you by name, and he has a particular place and work for you in his household. The God who had each Levite family named and assigned knows you, and has a part for you to play. You are known and you are needed; there is a place for you in the ordered service of God. Take up the part he has given you, known and named by him.

Lord, you had the Levite families counted and named, each with its place in the service of your dwelling. Thank you that those you set apart are not an anonymous mass but known by name and given a particular part. Assure me that I too am known by you and have a place and work in your household. Help me take up the part you have given me, serving faithfully in my particular role, known and named by you.
