Exodus 30:11-16: a reflection

11The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 12“When you take a census of the children of Israel, according to those who are counted among them, then each man shall give a ransom for his soul to the LORD when you count them, that there be no plague among them when you count them. 13They shall give this, everyone who passes over to those who are counted, half a shekel according to the shekel of the sanctuary (the shekel is twenty gerahs); half a shekel for an offering to the LORD. 14Everyone who passes over to those who are counted, from twenty years old and upward, shall give the offering to the LORD. 15The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less, than the half shekel, when they give the offering of the LORD, to make atonement for your souls. 16You shall take the atonement money from the children of Israel, and shall appoint it for the service of the Tent of Meeting; that it may be a memorial for the children of Israel before the LORD, to make atonement for your souls.”

When a census was taken, each Israelite was to give a ransom for his life, a half-shekel offering, as atonement. And the instruction is pointed about the amount: the rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less, than the half-shekel. Whatever a person's wealth, the ransom was the same. Before God, in the matter of atonement for the soul, the rich and the poor stood on exactly the same ground, owing exactly the same price.

Notice the equality this enshrines. In most of life, the rich can buy more and the poor less; wealth creates tiers, advantages, distinctions. But in the matter that mattered most, atonement for the soul, God leveled everyone. The same half-shekel from prince and pauper alike. No one could buy a superior standing before God with more money; no one was shortchanged for having less. Every soul was worth the same ransom, and every soul needed it equally.

That points to a profound truth fulfilled in the gospel. Before God, we all stand on the same ground: equally in need of redemption, and equally unable to buy a better standing than anyone else. The wealthy have no advantage, the poor no disadvantage, in the matter of the soul; all alike need atonement, and all alike receive it not by their own resources but as a gift. The one ransom that finally redeems us, the blood of Christ, is the same for every soul, rich or poor. Come to God not on the basis of what you can bring, which buys nothing, but on the basis of the one ransom given equally for all. Before him, we are all on level ground.

Lord, in the matter of atonement you made rich and poor give the same ransom, leveling everyone before you in the need for redemption. Thank you that before you I stand on the same ground as everyone else, equally in need and equally unable to buy a better standing. No wealth gives an advantage, no poverty a disadvantage, in the matter of the soul. Thank you that the one ransom that redeems me, the blood of Christ, is given equally for all. I come not on the basis of what I can bring, but of what you have given.
