Job 28:17-28: a reflection

17Gold and glass can’t equal it, neither will it be exchanged for jewels of fine gold. 18No mention will be made of coral or of crystal. Yes, the price of wisdom is above rubies. 19The topaz of Ethiopia will not equal it. It won’t be valued with pure gold. 20Where then does wisdom come from? Where is the place of understanding? 21Seeing it is hidden from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the birds of the sky. 22Destruction and Death say, ‘We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.’ 23“God understands its way, and he knows its place. 24For he looks to the ends of the earth, and sees under the whole sky. 25He establishes the force of the wind. Yes, he measures out the waters by measure. 26When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder, 27then he saw it, and declared it. He established it, yes, and searched it out. 28To man he said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. To depart from evil is understanding.’”

Job's great poem on wisdom asks where such wisdom can be found, and insists it is more precious than anything money can buy, worth more than gold, jewels, coral, or crystal. But where is it found? It is hidden, the poem says, from the eyes of all the living; no amount of searching or wealth uncovers it. God alone knows the way to it. And then comes the answer, God's own word to humanity: Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to turn away from evil is understanding.

Notice where true wisdom turns out to lie. Not in hidden, esoteric knowledge that only the clever or the initiated can find; not in accumulated information or cleverness; but in something available to anyone: the fear of the Lord, a reverent, humble relationship with God, and the turning away from evil. The wisdom more precious than gold is not a secret formula but a way of living, reverencing God and shunning evil. That is the wisdom, and it is open to all.

That is both humbling and freeing. Humbling, because it means true wisdom is not about how clever or knowledgeable we are; the simplest person who fears God and turns from evil has the wisdom that matters more than all the gold and learning in the world. And freeing, because it means wisdom is available to anyone willing to reverence God and forsake evil. If you want to be truly wise, do not chase after hidden knowledge or cleverness. Fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. That, God himself says, is wisdom and understanding, more precious than gold.

Lord, your word says that the fear of the Lord is wisdom, and to turn from evil is understanding, a wisdom more precious than gold and open to anyone. Humble me: true wisdom is not about how clever or knowledgeable I am, but about reverencing you and shunning evil. Free me from chasing hidden knowledge or cleverness as though they were wisdom. Teach me to fear you and to turn away from evil, and so to have the wisdom that matters more than all the gold and learning in the world.
