Leviticus 18:11-15: a reflection

11“‘You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s wife’s daughter, conceived by your father, since she is your sister. 12“‘You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s sister. She is your father’s near kinswoman. 13“‘You shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother’s sister, for she is your mother’s near kinswoman. 14“‘You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s brother. You shall not approach his wife. She is your aunt. 15“‘You shall not uncover the nakedness of your daughter-in-law. She is your son’s wife. You shall not uncover her nakedness.

These verses are part of a long list of forbidden sexual relationships, mostly within the extended family, prohibitions that can read as merely archaic legal detail. But underneath them is a deep concern: the protection of the family as a place of safety and trust. By drawing firm boundaries around sexuality within the household, God was guarding the family from becoming a place of exploitation, keeping it a space where the vulnerable, especially the young and the dependent, could be safe.

Notice the protective purpose beneath the prohibitions. The family and household are meant to be places of trust, where people are cared for and safe, not exploited or used. Without clear boundaries, the closeness of family life could become a cover for abuse and harm, the vulnerable preyed upon by those they should be able to trust. God's boundaries around sexuality within the family exist to protect that trust, to keep the household a safe place rather than a dangerous one.

That protective concern still matters. God's boundaries around sexuality are not arbitrary restrictions from a God who wants to spoil our pleasure; they are guardrails that protect people, especially the vulnerable, and preserve relationships of trust from becoming places of harm. Behind the seemingly dry prohibitions is a God who cares that the family be a place of safety, not exploitation. Honor God's boundaries around sexuality, not as joyless rules, but as protections for the vulnerable and for the trust that makes family and relationships safe. God's limits here are an expression of his care for people.

Lord, beneath these prohibitions is your care that the family be a place of safety and trust, not exploitation, especially for the vulnerable. Help me see your boundaries around sexuality not as arbitrary restrictions but as guardrails that protect people and preserve trust. Give me a heart that honors these limits as an expression of your care, keeping the relationships entrusted to me safe rather than harmful. Thank you that your commands, even the hard ones, are for the protection of people you love.
