Luke 4:28-34: a reflection

28They were all filled with wrath in the synagogue as they heard these things. 29They rose up, threw him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill that their city was built on, that they might throw him off the cliff. 30But he, passing through the middle of them, went his way. 31He came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. He was teaching them on the Sabbath day, 32and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word was with authority. 33In the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon; and he cried out with a loud voice, 34saying, “Ah! what have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God!”

After a violent rejection at Nazareth, where his own townspeople try to throw him off a cliff, Jesus comes to Capernaum and teaches in the synagogue. And the people's reaction is telling: they were astonished at his teaching, for his word was with authority. And that authority is confirmed in a dramatic way: when a man with an unclean spirit cries out, the demon itself recognizes exactly who Jesus is, I know who you are, the Holy One of God, and Jesus, with a word, casts it out. His word carries an authority that people feel and even demons must obey.

Notice the authority that marks Jesus. His teaching was not like that of the scribes, careful citations of other teachers; it carried its own authority, and people sensed it, astonished. And that authority was not mere impressive speech; it was real command over the spiritual realm, so that even a demon knew who he was and had to obey. Jesus speaks with an authority that is his own, an authority over both hearts and unseen forces.

That authority is why Jesus' word carries weight for us still. When Jesus speaks, in the Gospels, in his teaching, it is not merely good advice among many voices; it is the word of the Holy One of God, carrying his own authority. And that same authority means his word is able to do what it says, to command even the forces that oppose us, and they must obey. Do not treat the words of Jesus as one opinion among many. They carry the authority of the Holy One of God. Submit to that authority, receive his word as what it is, and trust the One whom even the unclean spirits recognized and obeyed.

Lord Jesus, your teaching astonished people because your word carried its own authority, and even demons recognized you as the Holy One of God and obeyed your command. Help me not to treat your words as one opinion among many, but to receive them as what they are, carrying the authority of the Holy One of God. Let me submit to your authority, and trust your word, which even the unclean spirits had to obey. Speak, Lord, and rule over my heart and over all that opposes me.
