Genesis 2:17-25: a reflection

17but you shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.” 18The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper comparable to him.” 19Out of the ground the LORD God formed every animal of the field, and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. Whatever the man called every living creature became its name. 20The man gave names to all livestock, and to the birds of the sky, and to every animal of the field; but for man there was not found a helper comparable to him. 21The LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. As the man slept, he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22The LORD God made a woman from the rib which he had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. 23The man said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken out of Man.” 24Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh. 25The man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.

In the account of creation, amid a world God repeatedly calls good, one thing is singled out as not good: It is not good for the man to be alone. So God sets about making a companion for him, and after the animals prove no true match, he forms the woman, and the man rejoices: This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. We were made, from the beginning, for relationship, not isolation.

Notice that this is the first thing in creation God calls not good: aloneness. Everything else God had made was good, but the man being alone was not good; it did not fit God's design for human life. We are made in the image of a God who is himself relational, and we are made for relationship, for companionship, for community. Isolation is not our natural or intended state; from the beginning, God said it is not good for us to be alone, and he provided companionship.

That is worth remembering in a world where many are lonely and isolation is common. The ache of loneliness is not a sign of weakness; it reflects a real truth of our design: we were made for relationship, and aloneness is genuinely not good for us. God made us to be in community, to know and be known, to give and receive companionship. If you are lonely, know that your longing for connection is right and God-given; you were made for relationship. And in a world of isolation, be one who reaches out, who welcomes and includes, who helps meet the deep human need for companionship that God himself named at the very beginning.

Lord, in a world you called good, the one thing you named not good was for the man to be alone, and you provided companionship, for you made us for relationship, not isolation. When I am lonely, remind me that my longing for connection is right and God-given, reflecting the way you made me. And in a world where so many are isolated, help me be one who reaches out, who welcomes and includes, who helps meet the deep need for companionship you named at the beginning. Thank you that you made me for relationship, and above all for relationship with you.
