1 Chronicles 6:31-46: a reflection

31These are they whom David set over the service of song in the LORD’s house after the ark came to rest there. 32They ministered with song before the tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting until Solomon had built the LORD’s house in Jerusalem. They performed the duties of their office according to their order. 33These are those who served, and their sons. This passage records the men David appointed over the service of song in the house of the LORD, the singers and their genealogies, Heman, Asaph, Ethan, and their families, who ministered with song before the tabernacle. It is a list of names, but it testifies to something: David took the worship of God seriously enough to organize it carefully, appointing particular people to the ministry of song, with their duties and their order.

Notice the care given to worship. The service of song was not left to chance or to whoever felt like it; David set people over it, appointed them, ordered their duties, took pains to see that the praise of God was done well and faithfully. Worship mattered enough to be organized, staffed, and given careful attention. The music and praise of God's house were treated as a serious ministry, worth dedicated people and thoughtful order.

There is something to learn from that care. Worship is not a trivial thing to be thrown together carelessly; it is the praise of the living God, worthy of our thought, effort, and dedication. David's appointment of singers reminds us to give worship the seriousness it deserves, to prepare, to give our best, to treat the praise of God as a genuine and worthy ministry rather than an afterthought. Whether or not we lead others, let us bring thought and care to worshiping God, giving him praise that is prepared and wholehearted, not careless. The worship of God is worth doing well.

Lord, David took the worship of your house seriously enough to appoint people over the service of song, ordering it with care. Teach me to give worship the seriousness it deserves. Keep me from treating the praise of you as a trivial afterthought, thrown together carelessly. Help me bring thought, effort, and my best to worshiping you, whether leading others or worshiping alone. You are worthy of praise that is prepared and wholehearted. Make my worship a genuine and careful ministry to you, the living God.
