Numbers 10:14-20: a reflection

14First, the standard of the camp of the children of Judah went forward according to their armies. Nahshon the son of Amminadab was over his army. 15Nethanel the son of Zuar was over the army of the tribe of the children of Issachar. 16Eliab the son of Helon was over the army of the tribe of the children of Zebulun. 17The tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, who bore the tabernacle, went forward. 18The standard of the camp of Reuben went forward according to their armies. Elizur the son of Shedeur was over his army. 19Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai was over the army of the tribe of the children of Simeon. 20Eliasaph the son of Deuel was over the army of the tribe of the children of Gad.

As Israel sets out from Sinai, the passage describes the ordered march: the standard of Judah's camp going first, then Issachar and Zebulun, the tabernacle taken down and carried by the Levites, then Reuben's camp, and so on, each tribe moving in its appointed place and order. This was no chaotic scramble but a purposeful, ordered advance, every tribe knowing its position, the whole camp moving forward together under God's direction.

Notice the orderliness of it, and its direction. The people did not each wander off on their own; they moved together, in order, each in their appointed place, and they moved when and where God led, following the cloud and the tabernacle at the center. There was both order, each in their place, and direction, all moving forward under God's leading. The journey had a shape and a guide.

That orderly, God-led advance is a quiet picture of the life of God's people. We are not meant to wander through life aimlessly or in isolation, each going our own way, but to move forward together under God's leading, each in the place he has given us. There is a dignity in knowing your place and playing your part in the larger movement of God's people, and a peace in following his direction rather than striking out on your own. Take your appointed place among God's people, and move forward as he leads. The journey has a guide; follow him, in step with the others he has given you, each in your place, all going forward together under him.

Lord, as Israel set out, each tribe moved in its appointed place and order, the whole camp advancing together under your direction, following the cloud and the tabernacle at the center. Help me find my place among your people and play my part faithfully. Keep me from wandering through life aimlessly or in isolation, each going my own way. Let me move forward with others under your leading, content in the place you have given me, following your direction rather than striking out on my own. The journey has a guide; help me follow you, in step with those you have given me, all going forward together under you.
