Zephaniah 3:1-5: a reflection

1Woe to her who is rebellious and polluted, the oppressing city! 2She didn’t obey the voice. She didn’t receive correction. She didn’t trust in the LORD. She didn’t draw near to her God. 3Her princes within her are roaring lions. Her judges are evening wolves. They leave nothing until the next day. 4Her prophets are arrogant and treacherous people. Her priests have profaned the sanctuary. They have done violence to the law. 5The LORD, within her, is righteous. He will do no wrong. Every morning he brings his justice to light. He doesn’t fail, but the unjust know no shame.

Zephaniah's woe against Jerusalem names, in four short phrases, the marks of a heart that has drifted from God. She did not obey the voice; she did not receive correction; she did not trust in the LORD; she did not draw near to her God. Four refusals, each a step further from God: not listening, not accepting correction, not trusting, not drawing near. And against this drift stands the steady faithfulness of God: the LORD within her is righteous; every morning he brings his justice to light; he does not fail.

Notice the four marks of the drifting heart, which serve as a searching self-examination. Would not obey: a deafness to God's voice. Would not receive correction: a refusal to be corrected or rebuked. Would not trust: a failure to rely on God. Would not draw near: a growing distance from him. Together they trace how a heart grows cold, not by one dramatic rejection, but by a series of quiet refusals to listen, to be corrected, to trust, to come close.

That is a useful mirror for our own hearts. Coldness toward God rarely comes all at once; it comes through small refusals, stopping our ears to his voice, resenting his correction, ceasing to lean on him, drifting from his presence. Examine yourself by Zephaniah's four marks: Are you listening to God, or tuning him out? Receiving his correction, or resisting it? Trusting him, or relying on yourself? Drawing near, or drifting away? And take heart that even where we have drifted, God remains faithful, righteous, present, bringing his justice to light every morning. Turn back to him, listen, receive correction, trust, and draw near.

Lord, Zephaniah named the marks of a heart drifting from you: it would not obey your voice, would not receive correction, would not trust you, would not draw near. Hold that mirror to my own heart. Show me where I am tuning you out rather than listening, resisting your correction rather than receiving it, relying on myself rather than trusting you, drifting away rather than drawing near. Keep my heart from growing cold through such quiet refusals. And thank you that even where I have drifted, you remain faithful, righteous, present, bringing your justice to light every morning. Turn me back to you: help me listen, receive your correction, trust you, and draw near.
