Numbers 4:24-28: a reflection

24“This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving and in bearing burdens: 25they shall carry the curtains of the tabernacle and the Tent of Meeting, its covering, the covering of sealskin that is on it, the screen for the door of the Tent of Meeting, 26the hangings of the court, the screen for the door of the gate of the court which is by the tabernacle and around the altar, their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and whatever shall be done with them. They shall serve in there. 27At the commandment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burden and in all their service; and you shall appoint their duty to them in all their responsibilities. 28This is the service of the families of the sons of the Gershonites in the Tent of Meeting. Their duty shall be under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

Here is another Levite family with its assignment: the Gershonites are to carry the curtains and coverings of the tabernacle, the screens, the hangings of the court, the cords. Soft, heavy fabric, folded and hauled from camp to camp. It is worth remembering what that fabric was: the covering of the tent where God met his people, the movable house of his presence.

Notice something easy to miss about the whole arrangement. God chose to dwell not in a fixed temple yet, but in a tent that traveled with his people through the wilderness, folded up and carried to each new place. And that meant someone had to carry it. The Gershonites' humble task of hauling curtains and cords was what allowed the dwelling of God to move with the people wherever they went.

There is quiet dignity in a job like that. Their work was not glamorous, but it served something wonderful: that God's presence went with his people, and did not stay behind. Much faithful service is like this, unglamorous carrying that makes it possible for God's presence and God's work to go forward among people. If your part feels like hauling fabric, remember what the fabric was for. The humble, portable service that lets God's presence move among his people is holy work. Carry your curtains faithfully.

Lord, the Gershonites carried the tent so your presence could travel with your people. Give me dignity in my own humble, unglamorous service, and let my faithful carrying help your presence and your work move forward among the people around me.
