1 Chronicles 11:1-9: a reflection

1Then all Israel gathered themselves to David to Hebron, saying, “Behold, we are your bone and your flesh. 2In times past, even when Saul was king, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. The LORD your God said to you, ‘You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over my people Israel.’” 3So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD. They anointed David king over Israel, according to the LORD’s word by Samuel. 4David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (also called Jebus); and the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were there. 5The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You will not come in here!” Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion. The same is David’s city. 6David had said, “Whoever strikes the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain.” Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, and was made chief. 7David lived in the stronghold; therefore they called it David’s city. 8He built the city all around, from Millo even around; and Joab repaired the rest of the city. 9David grew greater and greater, for the LORD of Armies was with him.

This is a coronation long delayed. David had been anointed king by Samuel years before, back when he was a shepherd boy, and in between came the long fugitive years, running from Saul, hiding in caves, waiting. Now, at last, all Israel gathers to him at Hebron and anoints him king in fact. The promise made long ago finally becomes reality.

Notice how long the gap was between the anointing and the throne. God's word to David had been true from the start, but its fulfillment took years, and hard ones, before it arrived. The delay did not mean the promise had failed; it meant the time had not yet come. What God had said would happen, happened, but on God's schedule, not on David's.

And notice the reason the Chronicler gives for David's rise: he became greater and greater, for the LORD of hosts was with him. Not his ambition, not his talent alone, but God's presence with him was the engine of it all. There is patience and humility here to carry. If God has promised or called you toward something that has not yet come, the delay is not the same as denial; his timing is his own. And when the rise comes, remember its true source: not your striving, but the Lord being with you.

Lord, the gap between your promise and its fulfillment can be long and hard. Give me patience to trust your timing without mistaking delay for denial, and when I rise, let me remember that the true cause is your presence with me, not my own striving.
