Nehemiah 7:46-56: a reflection

46The temple servants: the children of Ziha, the children of Hasupha, the children of Tabbaoth, 47the children of Keros, the children of Sia, the children of Padon, 48the children of Lebana, the children of Hagaba, the children of Salmai, 49the children of Hanan, the children of Giddel, the children of Gahar, 50the children of Reaiah, the children of Rezin, the children of Nekoda, 51the children of Gazzam, the children of Uzza, the children of Paseah, 52the children of Besai, the children of Meunim, the children of Nephushesim, 53the children of Bakbuk, the children of Hakupha, the children of Harhur, 54the children of Bazlith, the children of Mehida, the children of Harsha, 55the children of Barkos, the children of Sisera, the children of Temah, 56the children of Neziah, and the children of Hatipha.

Among the lists of those who returned from exile is this one: the temple servants, sometimes called the Nethinim, a list of family names, the descendants of Ziha, Hasupha, Tabbaoth, and many more. These were the lowest-ranking helpers in the temple, assigned to the menial tasks, the humble, behind-the-scenes labor of the sanctuary. And yet here they are, named and counted among the returning people of God, their families recorded alongside the priests and Levites, remembered and included.

Notice that even the humblest servants are named and counted. The temple servants did the lowest, most menial work; they were not the priests or the prominent leaders. Yet God's record includes them by name, counting them among his people, honoring their humble service by remembering it. In God's accounting, the lowly servant is not overlooked or nameless, but named, counted, and included.

That is a dignity God gives to the humblest service and the lowliest servants. In the world, the menial and behind-the-scenes workers are often overlooked, their names unknown, their labor unnoticed. But God notices; he names and counts even the humblest of his servants, honoring the lowly work that others overlook. If your service to God is humble, menial, behind the scenes, unnoticed by others, take heart: you are not overlooked by God. He names and counts even the humblest servant, honoring service the world ignores. Serve faithfully in your lowly place, knowing that God sees, names, and values you, and counts you fully among his people.

Lord, even the temple servants, the lowest-ranking helpers who did the menial work of the sanctuary, are named and counted in your record among your returning people. Thank you that you give dignity to the humblest service and the lowliest servants. In the world, the menial and behind-the-scenes workers are often overlooked, their names unknown, their labor unnoticed. But you notice; you name and count even the humblest of your servants. If my service to you is humble, menial, behind the scenes, unnoticed by others, help me take heart that I am not overlooked by you. You see, name, and value even the lowliest servant. Help me serve faithfully in my humble place, knowing you count me fully among your people and honor the service the world ignores.
