Genesis 27:41-46: in context

41Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him. Esau said in his heart, “The days of mourning for my father are at hand. Then I will kill my brother Jacob.” 42The words of Esau, her elder son, were told to Rebekah. She sent and called Jacob, her younger son, and said to him, “Behold, your brother Esau comforts himself about you by planning to kill you. 43Now therefore, my son, obey my voice. Arise, flee to Laban, my brother, in Haran. 44Stay with him a few days, until your brother’s fury turns away— 45until your brother’s anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send, and get you from there. Why should I be bereaved of you both in one day?” 46Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth. If Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these, of the daughters of the land, what good will my life do me?”

Esau, cheated of the blessing, hates Jacob and vows to kill him once their father has died. Rebekah hears of the threat and sends Jacob away to her brother Laban, telling him to stay until Esau's fury cools. To Isaac she gives a different reason, that she cannot bear Jacob marrying among the local women.

The deception of Isaac now bears its bitter fruit. The family that schemed to grab the blessing is torn apart by murderous hatred; Jacob must flee for his life, and Rebekah, who engineered the deceit, loses the son she favored, sending him away for what she thinks will be a few days and will become twenty years. Sin's consequences ripple outward: what was seized by trickery costs the whole family its peace, and the deceiver becomes a fugitive. And yet, in God's providence, this very exile will be where Jacob meets God and is changed. The road forced on him by sin becomes the road of God's dealing with him.

Do I see how grasping and deception fracture relationships, and can I trust that God can even redeem the hard road my own failures create?
