Zephaniah 1:1-6: in context

1The LORD’s word which came to Zephaniah, the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, in the days of Josiah, the son of Amon, king of Judah. 2I will utterly sweep away everything from the surface of the earth, says the LORD. 3I will sweep away man and animal. I will sweep away the birds of the sky, the fish of the sea, and the heaps of rubble with the wicked. I will cut off man from the surface of the earth, says the LORD. 4I will stretch out my hand against Judah and against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place—the name of the idolatrous and pagan priests, 5those who worship the army of the sky on the housetops, those who worship and swear by the LORD and also swear by Malcam, 6those who have turned back from following the LORD, and those who haven’t sought the LORD nor inquired after him.

Zephaniah opens with sweeping words of judgment against Judah, and among the sins named is a telling one: those who bow down and swear to the LORD and yet also swear by Malcam, a foreign god. Divided worship. Alongside them are those who have simply drifted, who have turned back from following the LORD and no longer seek him or inquire after him.

The double-minded had not abandoned the LORD outright; they tried to keep him alongside their idols, hedging their devotion between two masters. God names this attempt to worship him and other gods together as a thing to be cut off. He will not share the heart, and a divided loyalty is exposed as no loyalty at all. The drifters, meanwhile, have not consciously rebelled; they have merely stopped seeking, let their devotion quietly lapse. Both the double-minded and the drifting fall under the same word. God asks for undivided devotion, not a place on a crowded shelf of loyalties.

Have I let my devotion become divided, trying to serve the LORD while also swearing by other "gods," rather than giving him the undivided worship he asks?
