Zephaniah 1:1-6: a reflection

1The LORD’s word which came to Zephaniah, the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, in the days of Josiah, the son of Amon, king of Judah. 2I will utterly sweep away everything from the surface of the earth, says the LORD. 3I will sweep away man and animal. I will sweep away the birds of the sky, the fish of the sea, and the heaps of rubble with the wicked. I will cut off man from the surface of the earth, says the LORD. 4I will stretch out my hand against Judah and against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place—the name of the idolatrous and pagan priests, 5those who worship the army of the sky on the housetops, those who worship and swear by the LORD and also swear by Malcam, 6those who have turned back from following the LORD, and those who haven’t sought the LORD nor inquired after him.

In opening his prophecy of judgment, Zephaniah names a particular sin among God's people: divided worship, those who worship the LORD and also swear by another god. God speaks against those who worship and swear by the LORD and also swear by Malcam, and those who have turned back from following the LORD and have not sought him. The problem is not only outright idolatry but a divided allegiance, trying to hold onto the LORD while also swearing by another god, keeping a foot in both camps. God will not share the worship due to him alone; divided worship, honoring him and idols together, is a real evil. This confronts the danger of divided worship, trying to serve God and idols together. Divided worship, honoring God and idols together, is condemned. God will not share worship due to him alone. Trying to serve God and other gods together is a real evil. God calls for undivided allegiance.

Notice the particular sin Zephaniah names: not only those who have abandoned God entirely, but those who worship the LORD and also swear by another god, keeping a divided allegiance. They had not renounced the LORD outright; they still worshiped and swore by him. But they also swore by another god, hedging their bets, keeping a foot in both camps. And God names this divided worship as a real evil, for he will not share the worship and allegiance due to him alone. This confronts a subtle danger in us. We may not abandon God outright; but we can keep a divided allegiance, honoring God while also serving other gods, the idols of our own hearts, money, success, comfort, security, giving God a place but not the only place, hedging our devotion. God calls for undivided allegiance, undivided worship; he will not be merely one among our loyalties. To try to serve God and idols together is a divided worship that God condemns. God will not share the worship due to him alone. Divided allegiance, honoring God and idols together, is a subtle danger. God calls for undivided worship and devotion. Serve God alone, not God and idols together.

That is worth taking to heart, for God calls for undivided worship and allegiance, and divided worship, honoring him and idols together, is a real evil. We can keep a divided allegiance, not abandoning God outright but giving him a place alongside other gods, the idols of money, success, or comfort, hedging our devotion; but God named those who swear by the LORD and also by another god, and will not share the worship due to him alone. God calls for undivided devotion. Do not keep a divided allegiance, serving God and idols together; give God the undivided worship he alone deserves. Give God the undivided worship and allegiance he alone deserves, rather than keeping a divided heart that honors him and idols together, as Zephaniah named among God's people not only those who had abandoned the LORD entirely but those who worshiped and swore by the LORD and also swore by another god, keeping a foot in both camps; for God will not share the worship and allegiance due to him alone, and though we may not abandon him outright, we can keep a divided allegiance, honoring God while also serving the idols of our own hearts, money, success, comfort, or security, giving him a place but not the only place, which is a real evil, so that God calls for undivided worship and devotion, and we do well to serve him alone rather than trying to hold onto him while also swearing by other gods.
