Numbers 13:6-10: in context
6Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh. 7Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph. 8Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun. 9Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu. 10Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.
This is the roster of the twelve men sent to scout the promised land, one leader chosen from each tribe. Among the names are two that history would remember: Caleb of the tribe of Judah, and Hoshea the son of Nun, whom Moses would rename Joshua.
Twelve men set out on the same mission, saw the same land, and returned together; yet only these two would trust God's promise, while the other ten spread fear through the camp. The list is a quiet reminder that being chosen for a task and being faithful in it are not the same thing. All twelve were selected leaders, given the same opportunity and the same sight of the land; what set two of them apart was not ability or position but their trust in God when the report had to be given. The names look equal on the roster; the faith was not. And in the end, it was faith, not status, that decided who would enter the land.
Given the same opportunities as others, will I be found among the faithful few who trust God's promise, rather than among the many who give in to fear?
