Numbers 13:6-10: a reflection

As the twelve spies are chosen to explore the promised land, they are named individually, one leader from each tribe, each called by name for the task. Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh; of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun, the list runs, naming a representative from each tribe. Each was chosen and named for a particular role, a particular responsibility given to him. And among them were two, Caleb and Hoshea, who would prove faithful when the others failed. God knows and names those he calls to a task, giving each a particular role and responsibility. This shows that God calls and names individuals for particular roles. Notice that each of the twelve was named, one from each tribe, chosen for the task. This was not a faceless crowd sent out; each was an individual, named, given a particular responsibility to represent his tribe and explore the land. God calls people not as an anonymous mass but as individuals, each with a name, each given a particular role. And it is worth noting that among these twelve named men, two, Caleb and Hoshea, whom Moses renamed Joshua, would stand out for faith when the majority failed and brought back a fearful report. The same task was given to all twelve, but their responses would differ; character would tell. This reminds us of several things. God calls and names us as individuals, giving each a particular role and responsibility, not lost in the crowd. And within whatever role we are given, our own faithfulness matters; we can be among the faithful few even when many around us fail. We are each known and named by God, called to our own responsibility, and called to fulfill it faithfully, whatever others do. God knows and names us, giving each a particular role to fulfill faithfully. We are called as individuals, not lost in the crowd. Within our given role, our own faithfulness matters. That is worth taking to heart, for God calls and names us as individuals, giving each a particular role to fulfill faithfully, as the twelve spies were named and sent, and two proved faithful when the rest failed. We can feel lost in the crowd, or think our particular role and faithfulness do not matter; but God named each of the twelve, gave each a role, and honored the faithfulness of the two who stood apart from the failing majority. God knows and names us. Take up the particular role and responsibility God gives you, and fulfill it faithfully, even if others around you do not. Take up faithfully the particular role and responsibility God gives you, knowing that he calls and names you as an individual, not lost in the crowd, as the twelve spies were each named, one from each tribe, chosen for the task, and among them Caleb and Hoshea would prove faithful when the majority failed; for God calls people not as an anonymous mass but as individuals, each with a name and a particular responsibility, and within whatever role we are given our own faithfulness matters, so that we can be among the faithful few even when many around us fail, and we do well to receive the particular calling God gives us and fulfill it faithfully whatever others do, known and named by God who calls each of us to our own responsibility.
