Psalms 93:1-5: in context
1The LORD reigns! He is clothed with majesty! The LORD is armed with strength. The world also is established. It can’t be moved. 2Your throne is established from long ago. You are from everlasting. 3The floods have lifted up, LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice. The floods lift up their waves. 4Above the voices of many waters, the mighty breakers of the sea, the LORD on high is mighty. 5Your statutes stand firm. Holiness adorns your house, LORD, forever more.
This short psalm is a majestic declaration of God's kingship: the LORD reigns; he is robed in majesty and strength; his throne is established from of old, and he is from everlasting. And it paints a vivid picture of security amid chaos.
The floods lift up their voice, the waters roar and pound, an image of overwhelming, threatening forces, and yet, above the thunder of many waters, stronger than the breakers of the sea, the LORD on high is greater still. Higher than every raging force stands the God who reigns. There is deep comfort here for turbulent times. However loud and threatening the floods, the chaos and troubles that seem about to overwhelm us, God reigns above them all, unmoved on his eternal throne. His rule is not shaken by the storms that shake us. And his house is marked by holiness forever. When the waters roar in our own lives, we can lift our eyes to the God who reigns higher than every flood.
When the floods of trouble roar and threaten to overwhelm me, do I lift my eyes to the God who reigns, greater than every raging force, unshaken on his eternal throne?
