Psalms 93:1-5: a reflection
1The LORD reigns! He is clothed with majesty! The LORD is armed with strength. The world also is established. It can’t be moved. 2Your throne is established from long ago. You are from everlasting. 3The floods have lifted up, LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice. The floods lift up their waves. 4Above the voices of many waters, the mighty breakers of the sea, the LORD on high is mighty. 5Your statutes stand firm. Holiness adorns your house, LORD, forever more.
This psalm proclaims that the LORD reigns, clothed with majesty; and though the floods lift up their roaring waves, the LORD on high is mightier still, his throne established of old and unshaken. The LORD reigns, the psalm declares; he is clothed with majesty. The floods have lifted up their voice, the floods lift up their waves; but above the voices of many waters, the LORD on high reigns secure. The psalm pictures the roaring floods, the crashing waves of the sea, an image of chaos and tumult raising their voice. And above them all, unshaken, reigns the LORD, mightier than the roaring waters, his throne established from long ago, from everlasting. However the floods rage, God's reign is secure above them. This shows that the LORD reigns secure above all the tumult, mightier than the roaring floods. The LORD reigns secure above all the tumult, mightier than the floods. However the floods of trouble roar, God reigns above them. God's throne is established from old and cannot be shaken. Take comfort in God's secure, unshaken reign amid the tumult.
Notice the contrast the psalm draws, between the roaring floods and the reigning LORD. On one side are the floods: lifting up their voice, lifting up their waves, the mighty breakers of the sea, an image of chaos, tumult, and raging power, loud and threatening. On the other side, and above them all, is the LORD: reigning, clothed with majesty, mightier than the roaring waters, his throne established from long ago, from everlasting, unshaken. However loudly the floods roar, however high their waves, the LORD on high reigns secure above them, mightier than they, his reign unshaken by their tumult. This holds a deep comfort. There are floods that roar in our own experience: troubles, chaos, forces that rage and threaten, that lift up their voice loudly against us and seem overwhelming. But above all these, God reigns. His reign is not shaken by the roaring floods of trouble; he is mightier than they, seated secure on a throne established from of old. When the floods of trouble roar around us, we can lift our eyes above them to the LORD who reigns secure over all, mightier than the tumult, unshaken. His secure and majestic reign, over and above all that roars against us, is a ground of steady comfort. We do well to take comfort in God's secure, unshaken reign above all the tumult, lifting our eyes above the roaring floods to the LORD who reigns. Take comfort in God's secure reign above all the tumult that roars. However loudly the floods of trouble roar, God reigns above them. God's throne is established of old and cannot be shaken. Lift your eyes above the roaring floods to the LORD who reigns secure.
That is worth resting in, for the LORD reigns secure above all the tumult, mightier than the roaring floods, and we can take comfort in his unshaken reign, as the psalm proclaims. The floods of trouble can roar and seem overwhelming; but above them all the LORD reigns, mightier than the waters, his throne established from of old. God reigns above the tumult. When the floods of trouble roar against you, lift your eyes above them to the LORD who reigns secure, mightier than the tumult, and take comfort in his unshaken reign. Take comfort in God's secure, unshaken reign above all the tumult, lifting your eyes above the roaring floods to the LORD who reigns mightier than they, as this psalm proclaims that the LORD reigns clothed with majesty and that though the floods lift up their roaring waves the LORD on high is mightier still, his throne established of old and unshaken; for the psalm pictures the roaring floods and crashing waves of the sea as an image of chaos and tumult raising their voice, and above them all reigns the LORD, mightier than the roaring waters, his throne established from everlasting, so that however the floods rage God's reign is secure above them, which holds a deep comfort, since there are floods that roar in our own experience, troubles and forces that rage and threaten and seem overwhelming, but above all these God reigns, his reign not shaken by the roaring floods of trouble, mightier than they and seated secure on a throne established from of old, so that when the floods of trouble roar around us we can lift our eyes above them to the LORD who reigns secure over all, unshaken, his secure and majestic reign over and above all that roars against us being a ground of steady comfort, and we do well to take comfort in it and lift our eyes above the roaring floods to the LORD who reigns.
Lord, this psalm proclaims that you reign, clothed with majesty; and though the floods lift up their roaring waves, you on high are mightier still, your throne established of old and unshaken. And above them all, unshaken, you reign, mightier than the roaring waters, your throne established from long ago, from everlasting. However the floods rage, your reign is secure above them. Show me the contrast the psalm draws, between the roaring floods and you who reign. On one side are the floods: lifting up their voice and their waves, an image of chaos, tumult, and raging, loud and threatening. On the other side, and above them all, are you: reigning, clothed with majesty, mightier than the roaring waters, your throne established from everlasting, unshaken. However loudly the floods roar, however high their waves, you on high reign secure above them. This holds a deep comfort. There are floods that roar in my own experience: troubles, chaos, forces that rage and threaten, that lift up their voice loudly against me and seem overwhelming. But above all these, you reign. Your reign is not shaken by the roaring floods of trouble; you are mightier than they, seated secure on a throne established from of old. When the floods of trouble roar around me, I can lift my eyes above them to you who reign secure over all, unshaken. Take that to my heart. When the floods of trouble roar against me, help me lift my eyes above them to you, Lord, who reign secure and clothed with majesty, mightier than the tumult, your throne established of old and unshaken, and take comfort in your secure reign above all that roars against me.
