Genesis 35:16-22: in context

16They traveled from Bethel. There was still some distance to come to Ephrath, and Rachel travailed. She had hard labor. 17When she was in hard labor, the midwife said to her, “Don’t be afraid, for now you will have another son.” 18As her soul was departing (for she died), she named him Benoni, but his father named him Benjamin. 19Rachel died, and was buried on the way to Ephrath (also called Bethlehem). 20Jacob set up a pillar on her grave. The same is the Pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day. 21Israel traveled, and spread his tent beyond the tower of Eder. 22While Israel lived in that land, Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father’s concubine, and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve.

This passage holds deep sorrow and quiet hope together. Rachel, Jacob's beloved wife, dies giving birth, and with her last breath she names the child Ben-oni, son of my sorrow. But Jacob, grieving, renames him Benjamin, son of the right hand, a name of strength and blessing.

In that renaming there is a father refusing to let his son be defined forever by the sorrow of his birth. The mother's dying grief is real and honored, yet Jacob gently turns the child's name from sorrow toward hope. There is something tender and instructive here. Loss and grief are real, and Scripture does not hide them; Rachel's death is mourned, her grave marked. Yet even in grief, Jacob reaches for hope, giving his son a name that looks forward rather than only back at the pain. We can hold both, honoring our sorrows honestly while refusing to let them have the final word, trusting God to bring hope out of loss.

In my seasons of loss and grief, can I honor the sorrow honestly while still reaching, as Jacob did, for the hope that refuses to let pain have the final word?
