Proverbs 4:17-27: in context
17For they eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence. 18But the path of the righteous is like the dawning light that shines more and more until the perfect day. 19The way of the wicked is like darkness. They don’t know what they stumble over. 20My son, attend to my words. Turn your ear to my sayings. 21Let them not depart from your eyes. Keep them in the center of your heart. 22For they are life to those who find them, and health to their whole body. 23Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life. 24Put away from yourself a perverse mouth. Put corrupt lips far from you. 25Let your eyes look straight ahead. Fix your gaze directly before you. 26Make the path of your feet level. Let all of your ways be established. 27Don’t turn to the right hand nor to the left. Remove your foot from evil.
Proverbs sets two paths before us. The way of the wicked is like deep darkness, and they do not know over what they stumble; but the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, shining brighter and brighter until full day. Then comes one of the most important commands in all of Proverbs: keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
The heart, the inner core of who we are, is the wellspring from which everything else flows, our words, our choices, our whole direction; and so it must be guarded above all else. This is a call to attend to our inner life, not just our outward behavior. What we let into our hearts, what we treasure and dwell on there, will shape everything that flows out of us. And the passage gives practical help for guarding it: put away crooked speech, fix your eyes straight ahead, ponder the path of your feet, do not swerve to the right or the left. A guarded heart and a fixed direction keep us on the path that grows brighter toward the day. Above all the things we watch over, God says, watch over your heart, for your whole life flows from it.
Am I guarding my heart with vigilance, attending to my inner life and not just my outward behavior, mindful that from the heart flow the springs that shape my whole life?
