Proverbs 4:17-27: a reflection

17For they eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence. 18But the path of the righteous is like the dawning light that shines more and more until the perfect day. 19The way of the wicked is like darkness. They don’t know what they stumble over. 20My son, attend to my words. Turn your ear to my sayings. 21Let them not depart from your eyes. Keep them in the center of your heart. 22For they are life to those who find them, and health to their whole body. 23Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life. 24Put away from yourself a perverse mouth. Put corrupt lips far from you. 25Let your eyes look straight ahead. Fix your gaze directly before you. 26Make the path of your feet level. Let all of your ways be established. 27Don’t turn to the right hand nor to the left. Remove your foot from evil.

The passage sets two paths side by side. The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they stumble and do not even know over what. But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, shining brighter and brighter until the full day. A life given to God does not start in blazing noon. It starts as first light and grows, brightening steadily toward its fullness.

At the center stands the great counsel: keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it flow the springs of life. The father tells his son to guard what he lets in through his eyes and speaks with his mouth, to look straight ahead and keep his feet on a level path. Everything downstream, our words, our choices, our direction, rises from the wellspring of the heart. Guard the source, and the stream stays clean.

In a world eager to pour all manner of things into your heart, this is urgent, practical wisdom. Watch over what you feed your inner life, because it will shape everything else. Fix your gaze on what is good, turn your feet from evil, and trust that the path you are on, however dim it feels now, is meant to brighten toward full day. Tend the wellspring today, and let God make your way shine.

Lord, out of my heart flow the springs of my life, so help me guard it with all diligence. Watch over what I let in, and turn my gaze toward what is good. Keep my feet on a level path, and brighten my way like the dawn that grows toward full day. Tend the wellspring within me, that my whole life may be clean. Amen.
