Psalms 15:1-5: in context

1LORD, who shall dwell in your sanctuary? Who shall live on your holy hill? 2He who walks blamelessly and does what is right, and speaks truth in his heart; 3he who doesn’t slander with his tongue, nor does evil to his friend, nor casts slurs against his fellow man; 4in whose eyes a vile man is despised, but who honors those who fear the LORD; he who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and doesn’t change; 5he who doesn’t lend out his money for usury, nor take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be shaken.

The psalm asks a searching question: LORD, who shall dwell in your sanctuary? Who shall live on your holy hill? Who may come near to the holy God and abide in his presence? And the answer is not about ritual or status, but about character.

The one who may dwell with God is described by how he lives: he walks blamelessly and does what is right; he speaks truth from his heart; he does not slander with his tongue or wrong his neighbor; he keeps his word even when it hurts; he does not exploit the poor or take a bribe against the innocent. Notice how practical and relational this is. Dwelling with God is not shown by grand religious gestures but by ordinary faithfulness in how we speak, treat our neighbors, keep our word, and handle money. We cannot, of course, achieve this perfectly, which is why we need Christ, in whom we are made righteous. But the psalm still holds up the life God desires, and calls us to pursue it: to be people of integrity, truth, and faithfulness, in the ordinary dealings where character is really shown.

Does my everyday life, how I speak, treat my neighbors, keep my word, and handle money, reflect the integrity, truthfulness, and faithfulness of one who would dwell in God's presence?
