Psalms 15:1-5: a reflection

1LORD, who shall dwell in your sanctuary? Who shall live on your holy hill? 2He who walks blamelessly and does what is right, and speaks truth in his heart; 3he who doesn’t slander with his tongue, nor does evil to his friend, nor casts slurs against his fellow man; 4in whose eyes a vile man is despised, but who honors those who fear the LORD; he who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and doesn’t change; 5he who doesn’t lend out his money for usury, nor take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be shaken.

The psalm opens with a searching question: Lord, who may dwell in your sanctuary, who may live on your holy hill? Who is fit to be at home in the presence of a holy God? The answer that follows is not a list of rituals but a portrait of character: one who walks blamelessly, does what is right, and speaks truth from the heart. Nearness to God is bound up with the way a person actually lives.

The psalm fills in the picture with concrete, everyday integrity. This is someone who does not slander with the tongue or wrong a neighbor, who keeps a promise even when it turns out to be costly, who does not exploit others for money or take a bribe against the innocent. It is a portrait of ordinary honesty and faithfulness, tested in the small, private choices, how we speak of others, whether we keep our word, how we handle money and power over the vulnerable.

We cannot read this and imagine we perfectly measure up; the perfect fulfillment of it is found in Christ, and it is his righteousness that finally gives us a home in God's presence. But the psalm still calls us to a real and searching integrity, lived out in the details. Do you keep your word when it costs you? Do you refuse to profit at another's expense? Ask God to make you a person of this kind of steady, honest character, and rest in the One whose perfect righteousness welcomes you home.

Lord, you ask who may dwell with you, and the answer is a life of honest, steady integrity, truthful speech, kept promises, no profit at another's expense. I cannot claim to measure up, and I rest in Christ, whose righteousness gives me a home with you. Yet make me a person of real integrity in the small choices, keeping my word even when it costs, and honest before you and others. Amen.
