1 Peter 3:1-6: in context

1In the same way, wives, be in subjection to your own husbands, so that, even if any don’t obey the Word, they may be won by the behavior of their wives without a word, 2seeing your pure behavior in fear. 3Let your beauty come not from the outward adorning of braiding your hair, and of wearing gold ornaments or of putting on fine clothing, 4but from the hidden person of the heart, in the incorruptible adornment of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in God’s sight. 5For this is how in the past the holy women who hoped in God also adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands. 6So Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose children you now are if you do well and are not put in fear by any terror.

In a passage of instruction to wives, Peter draws a contrast that speaks a truth for everyone. He points away from outward adornment, elaborate hairstyles, gold jewelry, fine clothes, toward something deeper: let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious.

What God treasures, Peter says, is not the external appearance we work so hard on, but the inner character of the heart. There is a truth here that reaches far beyond its immediate setting. Our culture, like every culture, is preoccupied with outward appearance, spending enormous effort on how we look. But God's eyes are on the hidden person of the heart. The beauty he prizes is not the kind that fades, but the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, a heart marked by inner calm, trust, and gentleness. We are tempted to invest ourselves in the outward, the visible, the fading, and to neglect the inner life that God actually treasures.

Do I attend to the hidden person of the heart, cultivating the imperishable beauty God treasures, a gentle and quiet spirit, rather than investing myself in the outward appearance the world admires but which fades away?
