1 Peter 3:1-6: a reflection

1In the same way, wives, be in subjection to your own husbands, so that, even if any don’t obey the Word, they may be won by the behavior of their wives without a word, 2seeing your pure behavior in fear. 3Let your beauty come not from the outward adorning of braiding your hair, and of wearing gold ornaments or of putting on fine clothing, 4but from the hidden person of the heart, in the incorruptible adornment of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in God’s sight. 5For this is how in the past the holy women who hoped in God also adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands. 6So Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose children you now are if you do well and are not put in fear by any terror.

Peter, writing to wives in a particular cultural setting, lifts up a principle that speaks to every believer: true beauty is not mainly external. Let your adorning not be merely the outward things, he says, the elaborate hairstyles, the gold jewelry, the fine clothes, but the hidden person of the heart, the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in God's sight. He is not forbidding attention to appearance but reordering our priorities toward what lasts.

The contrast Peter draws is between beauty that fades and beauty that endures. Outward adornment, however lovely, is passing; the beauty of a heart that is gentle, calm, and trusting in God is imperishable and precious to him. Notice whose opinion Peter appeals to: this inner beauty is very precious in God's sight. The world prizes and rewards the external, but God treasures the quiet loveliness of a heart shaped by trust in him.

This is a gentle challenge in a culture obsessed with outward appearance. Where do you invest your effort and find your sense of worth, in the external things that fade, or in the hidden person of the heart that God treasures? Cultivating a gentle and quiet spirit, a heart that rests in God rather than being ruled by anxiety and self-display, is worth far more than any outward adornment. Ask God to grow in you that imperishable beauty which is precious in his sight.

Lord, the world prizes outward beauty that fades, but you treasure the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit. Reorder my priorities toward what lasts. Grow in me a heart that rests in you rather than being ruled by anxiety or self-display, and let my worth be found not in outward things but in the hidden person of the heart, which is precious in your sight.
