1 Chronicles 4:39-43: in context

39They went to the entrance of Gedor, even to the east side of the valley, to seek pasture for their flocks. 40They found rich, good pasture, and the land was wide, and quiet, and peaceful, for those who lived there before were descended from Ham. 41These written by name came in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and struck their tents and the Meunim who were found there; and they destroyed them utterly to this day, and lived in their place, because there was pasture there for their flocks. 42Some of them, even of the sons of Simeon, five hundred men, went to Mount Seir, having for their captains Pelatiah, Neariah, Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi. 43They struck the remnant of the Amalekites who escaped, and have lived there to this day.

This passage records how the sons of Simeon, needing pasture for their flocks, went out to look for it. They journeyed to the entrance of a valley and there found what they sought: rich, good pasture, and land that was wide and quiet and peaceful. They took the initiative to go seeking what they needed, and God provided a spacious and peaceful place.

What stands out is the combination of initiative and provision. The Simeonites did not simply wait passively; they went out, searched, and looked for pasture. And what they found was better than they might have hoped: not just adequate grazing, but land that was wide, quiet, and peaceful, room enough to settle and thrive. Their seeking was met with God's generous provision.

God often provides for us as we step out and seek, rather than sitting passively. And his provision can be generous, giving not merely the bare minimum but room to flourish, a wide and peaceful place. As the Simeonites went looking for pasture and found good, spacious land, we can step out in trust to seek what we need, expecting that the God who provides may give us room to thrive.

Will I step out in trust to seek what I need rather than waiting passively, trusting that God, who gave the Simeonites a wide and peaceful land when they went looking for pasture, provides for those who seek, and can give room to flourish?
