1 Chronicles 4:39-43: a reflection

39They went to the entrance of Gedor, even to the east side of the valley, to seek pasture for their flocks. 40They found rich, good pasture, and the land was wide, and quiet, and peaceful, for those who lived there before were descended from Ham. 41These written by name came in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and struck their tents and the Meunim who were found there; and they destroyed them utterly to this day, and lived in their place, because there was pasture there for their flocks. 42Some of them, even of the sons of Simeon, five hundred men, went to Mount Seir, having for their captains Pelatiah, Neariah, Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi. 43They struck the remnant of the Amalekites who escaped, and have lived there to this day.

This passage tells of a group of Simeonites who went out looking for pasture for their flocks and found what they were seeking: rich, good, wide land, quiet and peaceful. They had ventured out in search of provision, and God led them to a place that met their need, a spacious, restful land where their flocks could thrive. Their diligence in seeking was met with God's provision of a good place to settle.

There is a simple grace in this small account. The Simeonites did not sit still and wish for better pasture; they went and looked for it. And what they found is described in words that breathe rest and abundance: rich and good, wide and quiet and peaceful. Their seeking and God's providing came together. They took the initiative to search, and God had a good place prepared for them to find.

This holds a gentle encouragement about seeking the provision God has for you. Sometimes God's good gifts are found by those willing to go and look for them, to venture out in faith rather than sit still in scarcity. And what God provides is often described, as here, in terms of rest and spaciousness: a wide, quiet, peaceful place. Trust that God has good pasture for you, and be willing, like the Simeonites, to seek it. The God who led them to a rich and restful land can lead you to what he has prepared.

Lord, the Simeonites went out seeking pasture and found a rich, good, quiet, and peaceful land that you had prepared. Give me the faith to seek the provision you have for me rather than sitting still in scarcity. And thank you that what you provide is spacious and restful. Lead me, as you led them, to the good place you have ready, and let me trust your provision. Amen.
