Genesis 10:1-5: in context

This is the opening of the table of nations, the great family tree of humanity after the flood, tracing how the descendants of Noah's three sons spread across the earth. It begins with Japheth's line, Gomer, Magog, Javan, Tubal, and their sons, and ends with a summary: from these the coastland peoples spread out into their lands, each with its own language, by their families, in their nations.

This quiet chapter is doing something important. It insists that every nation on earth, all the scattered peoples with their different languages and territories, come from one family, from Noah, and before him from Adam. There is no master race here and no forgotten one; every people is charted as kin, branches of a single human tree. That one conviction, that all nations share one blood, undercuts every claim that one people is by nature superior to another, and it is the foundation Paul will build on when he tells the Athenians that God made from one man every nation to live on the earth. The differences the chapter notes, each after its own language, in its own lands, are real, but they sit inside a deeper unity: one family, spread out. And the God who scattered them into nations is the same God who will one day gather people from every one of these languages and tribes before his throne. The list of strange names is really a map of one human family.
