Genesis 10:1-5: a reflection

1Now this is the history of the generations of the sons of Noah and of Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Sons were born to them after the flood. 2The sons of Japheth were: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. 3The sons of Gomer were: Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. 4The sons of Javan were: Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. 5Of these were the islands of the nations divided in their lands, everyone after his language, after their families, in their nations.

This part of the table of nations traces the descendants of Japheth, spreading out into many peoples, and it ends with a telling note: from these the coastland peoples spread in their lands, each with its own language, by their clans, in their nations. As humanity multiplied after the flood, it spread into a great diversity of peoples, languages, lands, and nations. From one family came the many nations and tongues of the earth, a rich diversity of peoples.

Notice the diversity the passage records: many nations, many languages, many lands, spreading across the earth. This diversity of peoples and tongues is not an accident or a problem in Scripture's telling, but part of how the human family filled the earth. And this diversity has a place in God's purposes: the gospel is for all these nations, and Scripture's final vision is of a great multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language, gathered in worship before God.

That gives the diversity of the nations a place in God's heart and purpose. The many peoples, cultures, and languages of the earth are not to be erased or feared, but are part of the human family God made and loves, and each has a place in his purpose. God's heart reaches to every nation and tongue, and his final gathering will include people from all of them, their diversity brought into one worship. Value the diversity of the human family, not as a threat, but as part of God's good making and his wide purpose. And share God's heart for all the nations, longing, with him, for people from every language and people to know and worship him. The diversity of the nations will one day be gathered in praise before the throne.

Lord, the table of nations records humanity spreading into many peoples, languages, and lands, a great diversity of nations springing from one family. Help me value that diversity as part of your good making, not as a threat to be feared. The many peoples, cultures, and tongues of the earth are part of the human family you made and love, and each has a place in your purpose. Thank you that your heart reaches to every nation and language, and that your final gathering will include a multitude from all of them, their diversity brought into one worship before you. Give me your heart for all the nations, longing for people from every language and people to know you. Let me value the diversity of the human family, and long for the day when it is gathered in praise before your throne.
